Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai Film Review: A skillfully performed experience with varied outcomes.
Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai Movie Synopsis: A mortuary driver tasked with transporting a deceased individual, embroiled in a family conflict, crosses paths with a former folk artist in need of a ride. Their journey towards the southern region unveils unexpected acts of kindness amidst difficult situations.
Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai Movie Review: The central theme of Pogumidam revolves around humanity, illustrated through two characters who are strangers to one another as they embark on a journey to Tirunelveli and beyond. The film is driven by incidents, where dire circumstances reveal the authentic nature of these individuals.
Kumar (Vemal), the mortuary driver, is tasked with transporting a deceased individual to the family that has arranged the funeral. Complications arise when a rival faction from the deceased's family disputes who is entitled to perform the funeral rites, a matter steeped in pride. During his journey, Kumar encounters Nalinamoorthy (Karunas), a former theru koothu performer celebrated for his portrayal of the benevolent king Karnan. Nalin, known for his loquacious nature, challenges Kumar’s patience. Through Nalin’s perspective, the narrative unfolds, revealing Kumar’s character and the surrounding events. The film thus transforms into a voyage that highlights the essence of humanity amidst the prevailing tensions and harsh realities, illuminated by Nalin’s quirky demeanor and spontaneous opinions.
While aiming to resonate emotionally with the audience, Pogumidam... often falls into predictability and convenience. A significant plot point arises when they come across a couple stranded on the highway, who are revealed to be eloping, pursued by the girl’s family in a potential honor-killing scenario. This twist feels contrived, suggesting it is merely a device to further develop the characters of Nalin and Kumar. Additionally, Kumar’s personal situation—his pregnant wife in the hospital—lacks depth.
The film incorporates moments of humor between Kumar and Nalin, seamlessly woven into the narrative.
At its essence, the film primarily revolves around emotional experiences. While certain aspects are effective, the director tends to prolong the emotional sequences, particularly during the recounting of personal histories, utilizing heavy backgrounds and slow-motion effects. A more concise editing approach could have allowed for greater audience interpretation.
Notwithstanding these shortcomings, the film boasts commendable performances. Vemal makes his debut with Chennai slang and adeptly handles his serious role. Karunas skillfully showcases two contrasting facets of his character, Nalinamoorthy, embodying both the pride of being the foremost koothu artist and the accompanying anxiety and sorrow stemming from the declining popularity of this folk art. The supporting cast, including Pawan, Naren, Deepa (who occasionally overacts), Maha, and Vela Ramamurthy, contribute effectively to the overall performance.
Pogumidam.. presents a blend of elements that makes it worth watching at least once.
